Tucked along the coast of Sigatoka lies one of Fiji’s most unique natural treasures, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. Known for its towering sand formations, thick coastal forests and deep historical significance, the park continues to attract locals, tourists and even professional athletes looking for a memorable outdoor experience.
For park ranger Salome Tuinivatulele, the dunes represent far more than just a scenic landscape.
“This Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park is an important landmark for all Fijians,” she said.
“It is an environment that connects the folk tales of the past to the archaeological findings of today
“Showcasing how rich in history this place is.” Located just outside Sigatoka on Fiji’s Coral Coast, the park is home to rolling dunes that constantly shift with the wind, creating an ever-changing natural environment.
Beneath these sands lie some of the country’s most important archaeological discoveries, with ancient burial sites and artefacts that tell the story of Fiji’s early settlers.
But the park is not just about history. According to Mrs Tuinivatulele, it is a place that offers something for everyone.
Visitors walking along the trails will find themselves surrounded by thick coastal forests that provide natural shade from the tropical sun.
The towering trees form a canopy overhead while the fresh ocean breeze drifts inland from the nearby shoreline.
“The thick forest acts like a canopy for shade while the ocean breeze blows towards the ever-changing dunes.”
The landscape is also popular with athletes.
International rugby teams visiting Fiji have been known to use the dunes as a natural training ground, taking advantage of the soft sand and challenging slopes to build endurance and strength.
Yet for many visitors, the park offers something more personal.
Mrs Tuinivatulele says the dunes provide an opportunity for people to reconnect not only with nature but also with the land and community.
“It’s a place where you can give back to the community by building a connection with the land.”
Families often spend the day exploring the wide open spaces, enjoying nature walks and relaxing by the ocean. There is also a swimming spot by the sea, making it a refreshing escape for those wanting to cool off after a hike through the dunes.
With its wide landscape and peaceful surroundings, the park has become a favourite destination for families looking to spend quality time together.
“It’s a great place to reconnect as a family.”
Access to the park is affordable for most visitors.
The entry fee is $10 for adults, $7 for international students with identification and $5 for local students, making it an accessible outing for both locals and tourists.
For those looking for a quiet escape from busy city life, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park offers a chance to slow down and appreciate nature. Whether it’s walking through shaded forest trails, feeling the ocean breeze on the dunes, or simply spending time with family by the sea, the park continues to be a place where people can reconnect with nature and with each other.
The Sigatoka National Park is home to many indigenous birds in Fiji.
