Lila Wati says she has gotten used to going to bed hungry.
The Lakena, Nausori resident said her family’s situation was so bad they depended on a neighbour for food.
“My son was working before and our cupboards were never empty,” the 65-year-old said. “But when the lockdown happened he lost his job.
“Sometimes, our neighbours give us food but sometimes when we have nothing, we just sleep without eating.
“Everyone is struggling so I cannot rely on neighbours for food every day, so we just quietly go to bed.”
Ms Wati says the social welfare assistance she receives is used for medicines and other expenses.
“I feel like crying when I look at the empty shelves and buckets.
“I don’t even want to think about what will happen if the lockdown gets extended, I don’t know how we will manage.”
