Lawyer Semi Leweniqila has been appointed as the new Sugar Industry Tribunal on a three-year term that started on March 28th, the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has announced.
Mr Leweniqila replaces lawyer Devanesh Sharma.
Acting Chief Justice and chairperson of JSC, Justice Salesi Temo stated in a statement Mr Leweniqila has had 21 years post admission experience practising law as a barrister and solicitor.
He has also worked at the Director of Public Prosecutions, Howards Lawyers and was a council member of the Fiji Law Society.
Amongst its list of responsibilities, the Sugar Industry Tribunal has powers to hear and determine industrial disputes, register collective agreements, hear and determine any dispute between the Sugar Cane Growers Council and the Fiji Sugar Corporation and prepare and maintain the Register of Growers.
