THE Fiji Sports Council Grassroots Fiji Under-21 7s tournament kicked off its 2025 series with a bang in Savusavu last week at Ratu Ganilau Park.

The two-day competition was filled with high energy, lightning speed, and impressive skill from the 22 teams that took part.

Fiji Sports Council communications officer, Emosi Lasaqa explained that majority of the teams hailed from Vanua Levu and Taveuni, highlighting the abundance of rugby talent in the Northern Division.

Representing the West and Central divisions were AJ Pallets Ba River from Ba, and Suva-based teams Axellerate Dominion Brothers and Village Boys, alongside the home team FSC Grassroots Fiji U21 7s.

“Many of these players were identified during last year’s inaugural five-leg tournament, a clear sign that the development pathway is taking root and producing results on the field,” said Lasaqa.

“In a closely contested final, Axellerate Dominion Brothers edged out Village Boys 12–7 to claim the Savusavu leg title. Both teams delivered solid performances throughout the tournament, with the final decided by strong defensive play and decisive finishing.

“The 2025 edition also introduced volleyball to the tournament series under the open grade category. Blackrock from Labasa emerged victorious, adding another layer of excitement to the weekend and drawing a diverse crowd of supporters.”

He adds scouting will continue across all venues, with the tournament set to reach remote and maritime communities in Yasawa, Moala, and Kadavu, a commitment to unearthing hidden talent and growing grassroots sports across Fiji.

“As the series continues, the Fiji Sports Council remains focused on nurturing young athletes and providing a competitive platform for the next generation of rugby and volleyball stars.”

The Fiji Sports Council is encouraging interested teams to register for the Ovalau leg and continue to showcase their talent.”

The tournament moves to Nasau Park in Levuka, Ovalau, where it will take place next Friday and Saturday.
