Faith-based schools

OH yes, one does not need to be of the same faith to be a head teacher or principal of a faith-based school. But please consider the history and life of
the Christian faith-based schools, which is part of and an extension of the Christian church and the family or homes of the church members. The church consisting of families who belong to the same faith got together and raised funds for the building of the Christian faith-based school.
Yes, Government pays the teachers salaries but this does not mean that it can do as it wishes and thereby trying to change or break what has been an
accepted norm in a Christian faith-based school. The Catholic Church wants to uphold the tradition and history of having one of its own to head its
schools and they have every right to stand on this history and plead for the Government to respect its views. Other Christian faithbased schools should stand with the Catholic Churchon this issue. SAVENACA VAKALIWALIWA, Lakeba St, Samabula, Suva

US Constitution

IN the US Constitution, Article 6, clause 3, it says “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust ….” In 1789, the US adopted a Constitution which separated church from state. It also ensured civil and religious liberty and the right of self government. Many of those who first settled America were Christian exiles from Europe who were fleeing royal oppression and priestly intolerance. They found asylum in America anddetermined to be free from tyranny and religious bigotry. I believe they could only achieve this whenthey separated church from state. GABRIEL SIMPSON, Rakiraki

Poverty coverage

THE Media Watch Group’s 2018 report claims that Fijian newspapers covered less stories relating to poverty. I think daily readers of The Fiji Times can categorically state that their comments do not include this newspaper. The Fiji Times has a People section which covers stories about individuals
and families who have been struggling and persevering due to poverty. The latest, on page 10 of yesterday’s newspaper, Siteri Sauvakacolo covered
a story about Ravend Kumar of Lautoka. The Media Watch Group should be specific regarding poverty news coverage as it did by giving numbers
on news reports for 2018. MOHAMMED IMRAZ JANIF, Natabua, Lautoka

Expiry date

I TOOK my family to do the regular shopping on Friday at a supermarket in Lautoka and my son saw the fruitloops on special. It was sold for a dollar
for a medium packet. I became very suspicious and checked for expiry date. The expiry date read 25/01/19 so I went to inform the manager who told me that it was still valid until 11.59pm that night. A lot of supermarkets try selling the near expiry items on special but for breakfast cereal to be sold
on the day it expired is just unbelievable. Shoppers be careful when buying food items that are on special and please do check the expiry date.

Go Fiji, go

IN the past couple of days, I have watched all the Fiji 7s team games when they won the cup in Hamilton last year and their recent win at Cape Town.
There have been a couple of changes in the team that won at Hamilton but from the Cape Town performance, we Fiji Sevens fans have high hopes that
our boys will again spin their magic and retain the Hamilton crown. But, we all know that New Zealand Sevens team coach Tomasi Cama has
the ability to read our game and work out a game plan to disrupt and defeat our boys.Watching the boys in training at Albert Park and the many Fiji 7s supporters in New Zealand who turned up last year, making it back with more force this weekend, we can only say that our boys will give it their all to defend the Hamilton title. I am predicting that after Hamilton and Sydney,  our Fiji Sevens team will be leading in the overall points of the 2018/19 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Go Fiji, go SAVENACA VAKALIWALIWA, Lakeba St, Samabula, Suva
