DIWALI is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope, love and unity can illuminate people’s path, says Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh.

Joining the country in marking the Festival of Lights, Mr Singh said it symbolised peace, compassion and understanding the values that bound people together regardless of faith, culture and background.

“In Fiji, Diwali has always held a special place in our hearts,” said Mr Singh.

“It reflects our nation’s strength in diversity, where families of all ethnicities come together to share joy, food, laughter, and the spirit of togetherness.

“It is through such unity that we continue to build a stronger, more compassionate Fiji.”

He said under the Coalition Government’s leadership, his ministry remained committed to empowering communities and uplifting lives through meaningful initiatives.

“Through the Multi-Ethnic Affairs Community Grant Program, more than $1.2 million was allocated last financial year to support grassroots projects across temples, mosques, churches, and community halls enhancing social and cultural spaces that foster inclusivity.

“This year, Government has increased this funding to $2million, with over 1000 applications received, demonstrating growing confidence and participation from all communities.

“In the sugar sector, I am also pleased to share that over 10,200 sugarcane farmers will receive a special cane payment before Diwali.

“This includes a Government top-up of $8.27, taking the fourth payment to $9.47, and lifting the total payout for the 2024 crop to $101.13 per tonne.

“Apart from this, this is the first time in history where the Government has compensated the sugarcane farmers with Pre-Season burning of sugarcane. We have assisted over 57 farmers with total amount $101,725 around Fiji.”

He also urged Fijians to remember those that were experiencing hardships and loss.
