Suva’s former football stars reunited at the Fiji Football Association Hall last Saturday to reconnect, share memories and honor the district they once proudly represented.
This was the first time since 1983 that many of these players met together, making it the first reunion of its kind for a football club in Fiji.
The Suva Legends Reunion brought together players from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, a time when Suva dominated local football and built a strong following across the country.
The event was led by former Suva captain Jone Ratu, who served as chairman of the organising committee.
He was supported by fellow former reps Aisea Mocelutu, George Samisoni, now the chief executive of FINTEL and William Lasaqa.
The evening was made possible through the support of Vodafone, FINTEL, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) and the Fiji FA.
Among those present were David Leewai, Tony Kabakoro, Severo Koroduadua, George Zoing, Suka Tuba, Samuela Molilevu, and many others who once wore the Suva jersey with pride.
Former national goalkeeper and Suva coach John Grey shared memories of the team’s back-to-back IDC victories in 1981, 1982, and 1983.
He spoke about the dedication players had to their district.
“Commitment to Suva was everything back then,” Grey said.
“We didn’t worry about rewards or time at home, if you were selected, you gave it your all. That was just the mindset.”
Also present were Clyde Lagilevu, Inosi Cava, Meli Debalevu, William Sikuri, Harris Bali, Lorima Batirerega and former national rep Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the current Tui Namosi and deputy chair of the Great Council of Chiefs. Some former reps travelled from overseas to attend, including George Zoing and David Simmons from Australia and Dhamesh Prasad and Mukesh Chand from New Zealand.
The night was filled with stories, laughter and a deep sense of respect for the players who helped build Suva’s football legacy.
