Leap of faith | Kadavu celebrates long-awaited promotion

KADAVU has made a determined effort in the past to reach new heights in provincial rugby competitions.

The senior men’s team got promoted to next year’s Skipper Cup from the Vanua Cup, along with the recent successes of its women’s team in the Marama Cup, victory could not have come at a more opportune time.

These were the sentiments of its women’s rugby head coach Etonia Nauro, when asked what the mood had been like following the promotion of their male counterparts to the main competition.

“For the ladies here in camp, we are so happy” Nauro said.

“Even though the Kadavu team is made up of some players from other provinces, but the plan set in place from last year was for us to support one another to help elevate Kadavu.”

Kadavu beat Navosa 23-17 nearly a fortnight ago in Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka in an intensely-contested finale that infused the tauvu spirit in both teams and a display of ferocious no-guts-no-glory rugby.

It had been a long time coming for them.

When the men’s head coach Josevata Bola was interviewed following their 18-13 semi-final win over Taveuni, which promoted them to the Skipper Cup, he revealed how long it took to get them there.

“As for us, we were planning for three years that Kadavu will go into the Skipper Cup,” Bola told Times Sport then.

“So, we thank God we have achieved it this year and I hope we will prepare very well for the next year before the Skipper Cup starts.”

And noting this, Nauro said the victory and promotion of their men counterparts to the Skipper Cup next year was a bonus itself.

Meanwhile in Tavuki, Kadavu yesterday, the village was brought to life by scenes of entertainment and joyous merry-making as the men’s side crossed over from Viti Levu with the trophy.

Last Saturday, celebrations in Suva were held at John Wesley Primary School with chiefs from the province’s nine districts present at the occasion.
