Electing church leaders should not be based on seniority but based on their performance, says Methodist Church president Reverend Semisi Turagavou.
He told church ministers that gathered at Centenary Church in Suva that true leaders of Christ were led by the Holy Spirit, whose hearts were with the people and not money.
“The selection of the talatala qase (senior minister) should be based on performance rather than seniority. We cannot rely much on seniority within our mission fold,” he said.
“For the past three consecutive years, 20 divisions have shown a decline in church membership and this is a clear indication of low and medium rate of performance.
“Some have unfortunately shown poor performance and in view of these unsatisfactory performance, it is time to lay down some practical solutions in order to address and liberate the current situation.”
Mr Turagavou reiterated that true leaders were led by the Holy Spirit.
“The church needs to grow healthy and in line with spirituality and belief system as spirit led servants will definitely make a difference,” Mr Turagavou said.
“Leaders need to act wisely and be honest in what they do, work to add value to the Christian community and beyond.
“Leaders must be trusted. Without trust our work is meaningless so let’s be wise and add value to the work for the people we serve.”
He reminded leaders about the importance of listening carefully and attentively to the voice of God.
“Keep the identity of Christ church more than just a human organisation and we need to be subservient to our calling rather than personal interest in order to move constructively.” |
