THE $2.1million development project at the Fiji Sports Council’s Lawaqa Park facility is well on track to be completed by the end of the year.
Following an on-site visit on Thursday, council chief executive officer Litiana Loabuka with manager properties John Pickering gave their sign of approval on major works done so far.
“Construction works are as per schedule and I am very excited about what this re-development for Lawaqa Park will mean for the council and its valued patrons from 2016 and beyond,” said Loabuka.
“As the major sporting hub along the Coral Coast, this investment supports our vision to being the country’s leading provider in sports facilities and events.” The last big game played at Lawaqa Park was the first round of the HFC Bank Farebrother Challenge after which construction began.
Pickering said the scope of work included the main grandstand roof replacement, building sheer walls resistant to earthquake damage and the new concrete surface placed all around behind the grandstand.
The project includes a new emergency area section created with the concrete placements adjoining the new VIP access driveway for guests.
No major works were done to Lawaqa Park since it was built in 1998,.
The first major event expected to kick-start the revamped Lawaqa Park will be the Bayley’s Coral Coast 7s scheduled to be held in January 2016.
