A new bill before Parliament proposes to amend the Fiji National University Act 2009 to reflect the transfer of the university’s oversight from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics.
The Fiji National University (Amendment) Bill 2026 was introduced in Parliament yesterday afternoon by the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka.
The Bill seeks to make a technical change to the definition of “Minister” under the Act to align with the Government’s decision to reassign responsibility for the university.
According to the explanatory note accompanying the bill, the amendment is intended to give legal effect to the administrative shift in ministerial oversight.
Clause 2 of the bill proposes to amend Section 3 of the Fiji National University Act 2009 by removing the reference to the Education minister responsible for tertiary education and replacing it with the minister responsible for the administration of the Act.
The change effectively allows the responsibility for Fiji National University to sit with whichever minister is assigned oversight of the Act.
The explanatory note states that the amendment reflects the reassignment of Fiji National University (FNU) to the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics.
The Bill will be debated today and if passed by Parliament, the law will come into force on a date determined by the responsible minister and published in the Gazette.
