Lautoka sets target

THE Lautoka Rugby Union is aiming for a semi-finals berth at the Skipper Cup competition and targeting to grab the Farebrother Sullivan trophy this season.

The union held its annual general meeting recently where the office bearers for the next three years were elected.

Joji Satala, who is the new president, said Ifereimi Rawaqa had been appointed as head coach for the Maroons.

Satala said plans were in place to lift the standard of club rugby.

“The union held its franchise competition which was sponsored by BLK,” he said.

“The club competition started last week with more than 40 teams competing in the Super Premier, Premier and Senior A grades.

“We have appointed Rawaqa as the head coach of the Maroons and hopefully he can take us back to winning ways.”

Rawaqa captained Lautoka to both major titles in 2003 winning the then Telecom Cup and the Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy.

Soon after that Rawaqa signed up with Japanese club World Fighting Bulls.

Meanwhile, the Namoli club has been boosted with a new set of jersey.

Namoli, which was a powerhouse in 15s and the abbreviated codes in the 1980s and 1990s, are hoping to make a comeback.

Satala, who is a Namoli club spokesperson, said the tokatoka Navitua of the mataqali Vidilo had come in to assist the team.

He said the sponsorship would boost the morale of the players.
