LAUTOKA-BASED Goju Ryn Karate Club defended their 2017 National Karate Championship title which was held at Yat Sen Hall in Suva on Saturday.
Karate Fiji president Angela Birch said it was one of the largest championships hosted this year.
“With over 65 karate-kas entered for the event, from all 4 Dojos, namely YMCA, Suva Goju Ryu, Karate Nadi and Goju Ryu Lautoka, this was the largest local championship hosted this year,” she said.
“Numbers in the sport have been growing, and are expected to continue with the work that is being done at Dojo level by the respective head instructors, and the Karate development officer, Sensei Pita Lenoa. Skills acquired at OSEP (Office of Special Education Programs) coaching and administration courses through the support of FASANOC have also supported the technical team with their work.”
Birch said they had more tournaments in the coming months.
“Karate Fiji is grateful to Fiji Care, the Fiji National Sports Commission, FASANOC, OSEP and ONOC (Oceania National Olympic Committee), all its volunteers, and all supporters for their continued assistance towards Karate Fiji’s development,” she added.
