THE Lau Provincial Council has endorsed and launched a task force to deal with HIV and drug issues in the islands.

The idea, proposed forward by the Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita Mara, will have a taskforce membership of key people, three youths and two women who would work with the committee to combat these social ills. Provincial council chairman Ratu Meli Saubulinayau said the establishment of the committee was a result of what Ratu Tevita had highlighted in the media last week.

Roko Tui Lau Jioji Kaloinivalu said they were serious about combating these social ills and supported Ratu Tevita in setting up the taskforce.

Presenting details of the task force at the council meeting in Suva earlier this week, Nacanieli Yalimaiwai said Ratu Tevita wanted these issues addressed as soon as possible.

“The Turaga (Ratu Tevita) is very concerned about these issues and wants them addressed immediately because they affect our youths and he doesn’t want them to affect the whole Lau Group,” Mr Yalimaiwai said. “The team will create platforms for open conversation among all stakeholders and work in collaboration with the Government, community and organisations in dealing with the matter.

“They will also draw up a strategic action plan, developing an evidence-based plan that addresses root causes and the rights and needs of all Lau people.”

Mr Yalimaiwai said the taskforce would be committed to creating lasting, positive change for all Lau people, both in the islands and urban centres.
