Considering how often Las Vegas has been mentioned in The Fiji Times, readers may be interested in learning more about it.
Las Vegas, which has a population of about 15,000, was established in 1835. In 1879, the railroad was run to it. Its Plaza Hotel was built in 1882, was restored in 1982, and has 72 rooms. It has a Carnegie Library which was built in 1903. There is an interesting museum and a number of historic buildings. It’s about 200km from Albuquerque, NM, where I live.
However, I suspect that when The Fiji Times refers to Las Vegas, even though it never specifies the state, it means Las Vegas, Nevada, rather than Las Vegas, New Mexico, which is what I have described. The two cities are about 1115km apart. Las Vegas, NE, is about 40 times bigger than Las Vegas, NM, since its population is about 600,000; it was incorporated 70 years later.
If you visit Las Vegas, NE, I suggest that you also visit Las Vegas, NM, because it is much more historic and far less frantic. Besides, few people have ever heard of it.
