THE proposed $1.4billion Vuda Waste-to-Energy Power Plant remains unconfirmed and under scrutiny, says a Vuda chief who is stressing that the project is still in its early stages.
Ratu Meli Tora said while concerns were mounting, the process must be allowed to run its course.
“Nothing has been confirmed,” he said.
“It is a good sign that people are raising their concerns.
“This is all part of the democratic process and I am sure it will go through thorough scrutiny.”
He confirmed that the Vuda Yaubula Committee was reviewing submissions and examining the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before providing feedback to the relevant authorities.
“I am leaving it in their good hands.”
Despite calls for calm, resistance on the ground is intensifying. Landowners in Lauwaki Village have openly opposed the project, warning it threatens their coastline and tourism-based developments.
Tokatoka o Wadigi headman Apimeleki Nasalo said the proposed facility could derail plans for resort investment in the area.
Ratu Meli acknowledged the strong views but urged stakeholders to follow due process.
“We have to properly scrutinise the reports and take our concerns to the right authorities. That is the democratic process.”
Questions sent to the developer and Australian businessman Ian Malouf remain unanswered.
