LAMI High School fielded two teams in the Hibiscus Touch Rugby tournament that concluded at Albert Park in Suva yesterday.
This is part of the school’s holistic approach to learning where they believe that sports are no longer an extra-curricular activity.
“It (sports) is a co-curricular activity, it’s a career pathway,” Lami High School principal Naisa Cama stated. Building on the success of their rugby under-19 team in Deans, the school has now opened another door for students who can excel in other sports.
“We are involving our children in all kinds of sports, we were invited to take part in this competition, so we are taking up the sport involving kids who are looking to pursue a career path here.
“We are also taking part in cricket and off-season for rugby league for the first term next year,” he added. These are all going together with their academic work with students attending holiday classes before attending their respective games.
The school was also holding night classes as they aim for a 100 per cent pass rate this year.
“We believe that in inclusive education we must meet the child at the point of their need.”
Behind this dream is the immediate aim of keeping their students busy and occupied at a time when drug use is on a spike in Fiji.
“There are a lot of social issues now, the fight against drugs involving teenagers so we are giving our kids different platforms to deviate from social ills.
“Students instead of being idle, are using sports as a motivation to do something worthwhile, tapping on their talents and giving them an opportunity to pursue a career in life in sports,” the principal said.
Cama also shared some of the school’s sporting aspirations for 2025 which include fielding a girl’s rugby team in the Raluve competition and an U18 Dean team, if they have the numbers for it.
