THE newly appointed deputy head boy of Queen Victoria School, Ratu Tuikilakila Lalabalavu, has pledged to address bullying at the institution, describing it as a long-standing issue that needs urgent attention.
The student leader, who hails from Somosomo in Taveuni, said bullying remained one of the biggest challenges in many boarding schools, particularly involving the mistreatment of junior students by some senior boys.
He said there had been instances where younger students were pressured into washing clothes and carrying out chores that were not assigned to them.
“Many issues in this school are the boys, especially senior boys,” he said.
“This year, our main priority is to try and decrease the number of bullying cases, even try to stop bullying.”
Lalabalavu acknowledged that his new role carries significant responsibility and said he intends to lead with integrity while serving and protecting fellow students.
“It’s a big responsibility not only for me, but for the school.”
He said his plans were to work closely with school leaders and house captains to improve and strengthen discipline within the school community.
“For us this is a year to work together, and to believe in ourselves and the leadership roles we play.”
He also credited his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey, describing them as his greatest source of strength during challenging times as a student.
Looking ahead, Lalabalavu aspires to become a lawyer, driven by his passion for justice and discipline, values he believes are essential in breaking the stigma of bullying in schools.
