The Labasa women’s side has exceeded its own expectations at the OFC Women’s Champions League in the Solomon Islands.

The side, which plays Hekari United in the semi-final today, is participating in the tournament for the second year only.

Midfielder Vanisha Kumar said reaching the last eight stage of the tournament was beyond their expectation.

“We came in as underdogs. We didn’t do very well last year, so the expectations were quite low for us, so I think the team is quite happy with how we have progressed in the competition,” Kumar said.

“It is kind of unexpected for us as well as we didn’t expect to do as well as we did but we are all pretty happy about it,” she said.

Labasa held New Zealand champions Auckland United to a 1-all draw in the first match before defeating Veitongo 2-0, and held AS Academy Feminine to qualify for the semi-finals.

Labasa meets Hekari United at 12pm in Honiara.
