Taxi drivers in Labasa are bracing for heavy losses as the Labasa Airport prepares to close for more than a month for essential runway upgrades.
Labasa Taxi Association president Mahen Prasad said those who relied on airport traffic as their main source of income could lose hundreds of dollars during the closure period from February 16 to March 27.
“I feel sorry for the drivers who will be affected,” Mr Prasad said.
“The airport will be closed for over a month, and for many, this is their main source of income. These drivers will lose hundreds of dollars.
“Many have families to support and this sudden loss will hit them hard.
“Some have loans or bills to pay, and without their usual earnings, it will be very stressful.”
Mr Prasad said finding alternative work would be difficult while the airport remain closed.
“The local community relies on these drivers for transportation, so the impact is felt beyond just them. I hope some support or relief is offered to help them through this period.
“Their dedication and hard work deserve recognition and assistance. If nothing is done, some may struggle to make ends meet until the airport reopens.” The Labasa Airport will be temporarily closed to facilitate critical runway pavement strengthening to maintain long-term safety, structural integrity, and compliance with international aviation standards. Fiji Airports chief executive officer Mesake Nawari had said planned runway upgrades were vital to addressing structural issues and ensuring ongoing compliance with international aviation safety standards.
