Fiji Airports has confirmed that day one of runway strengthening works at Labasa Airport officially commenced today, marking the start of a major upgrade aimed at enhancing safety and improving the overall travel experience for passengers and stakeholders.
In a statement, Fiji Airports advised that Labasa Airport will be temporarily closed from Monday, 16 February 2026 until 27 March 2026, and has urged travellers to make alternative travel arrangements during this period.
“Construction has officially commenced as we begin this important upgrade to enhance safety and improve the overall travel experience for our passengers and stakeholders,” the statement said.
“We kindly ask all travellers to make the necessary travel arrangements during this period.”
Fiji Airports said the project will deliver a stronger and safer runway for the North, contributing to improved air connectivity and service reliability in the Friendly North.
Ahead of the works, Fiji Airports yesterday acknowledged and paid tribute to the traditional landowners of the area by presenting a sevusevu to the villagers of Nakama Village, in particular members of the mataqali Nabukarabe.
Accompanied by contractors Flametree Fiji, the Fiji Airports team visited Nakama Village to formally inform the community of the project timeline and the commencement of works.
“We remain committed to keeping all stakeholders informed through open dialogue, respect, and partnership,” Fiji Airports said.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work towards delivering a stronger, safer runway for the North — improving your Bula Experience.”
Fiji Airports said updates on the progress of the works will be shared as construction continues.
