The Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s tournament is set to kick off this week at Subrail Park in the north town, and there is a buzz of excitement surrounding the event.
The defending champions Raiwasa Taveuni are looking to retain their title and are one of the favourites, according to tournament spokesman Jackson Tuvici.
Tuvici said there was a lot of anticipation for the tournament in north town, with Raiwasa Taveuni, Police Blue and Police White the top teams to watch out for this year.
However, Tuvici also pointed out that there were some upcoming teams on Vanua Levu who have been working hard and should not be underestimated despite not having won previous tournaments.
“The Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s committee plans to use the funds raised from the tournament to build a gym and a multi-purpose court which will benefit the community here in Labasa,” said Tuvici.
He added this year’s Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s promises to be an amazing event, filled with top-class rugby. He said with the added attraction of futsal soccer, the anticipation is high, and fans can expect an unforgettable few days of sports and entertainment.
The tournament, which is the fifth leg of the Fiji Bitter 7s Series, starts on Thursday with 48 men’s teams, eight women’s teams and 16 youth teams.
The men’s winner will walk away with $8000.
