La Niña to bring risk of very wet conditions until March

Fiji Meteorological Service  states there is the potential for very wet conditions across parts of Fiji in the coming weeks and months as La Niña conditions remain in place.

This is stated in the Early Action Rainfall Watch issued yesterday that can assist the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and disaster management stakeholders with an overview of recent rainfall patterns and the rainfall outlook to support early preparedness and response planning.

According to the outlook, for the period 15 to 28 January, there is a medium chance of very wet conditions across the Northern Division, Yasawa-i-Rara, Viwa, the Mamanuca Group and Rotuma.

For January 2026, the watch indicates a medium chance of very wet conditions for some interior parts of Viti Levu as well as most parts of Vanua Levu.

Looking further ahead, the outlook for January to March 2026 shows a continued medium chance of very wet conditions in interior Viti Levu, including Monasavu and Dobuilevu, as well as Seaqaqa, Labasa and parts of Northern Vanua Levu.

Meteorological authorities confirmed that La Niña conditions are currently in place under the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system, a climate pattern typically associated with increased rainfall across Fiji.

Authorities are urging communities, particularly in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant, monitor official updates and take early preparedness measures as wetter conditions may increase the risk of flooding and related hazards.
