Kumar sworn in as Fiji’s Chief Justice

Chief Justice Kamal Kumar was sworn in by President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote this afternoon.

According to the Fijian Government, Justice Kumar was acting in the post for two years and three months and had served for Fiji’s High Court since 2013.

Justice Kumar acquired his Bachelor of Law from the Queensland University of Technology, Australia in 1999 and was admitted as a barrister to the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of Queensland.

From 2000 to May 2013, he was a lawyer at Young & Associates, Solicitors, Lautoka and was sworn in as a judge in the High Court of Fiji (Civil Division), a post he retained from May 2013 to April 7, 2019.

In September 2018, Justice Kumar was appointed as chairperson for the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.

His appointment has been extended for another three years from January 2021 until 2024.
