Former schoolteacher Kishore Kumar told the High Court he struggled to communicate with the Legal Aid Commission (LAC) because of his mental health issues.

On August 22, Kumar informed Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull that he had chosen to represent himself because he could not comprehend what LAC officers were explaining.

He said he heard voices in English but was able to understand when spoken to in Hindi.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking judgment guidelines from the High Court for cybercrime offences.

Kumar had been charged with making false pornographic claims against Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua. He faced six counts of causing harm by posting electronic communication and one count of criminal intimidation.

In April, he received a 32-month sentence suspended for five years and was ordered to St Giles Hospital as an outpatient under case management.

He was also handed a 12-month suspended sentence for abusive words directed at Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh.

Kumar has since agreed to have an Indo-Fijian lawyer represent him. Justice Bull has granted him 14 days to secure representation through LAC.

The case has been adjourned to September 10.
