FIJI’S performance against New Zealand women’s national football team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Oceania Qualifiers semi-finals showed two very different halves and a lot to take away despite the 0-5 loss.

New Zealand’s early dominance in Hamilton was decisive. Scoring four goals within the first 30 minutes effectively settled the contest before Fiji Kulas could find their rhythm.

Against a side of that calibre, those early lapses are hard to recover from.

What stands out, though, is Fiji’s response after halftime. Players like goalkeeper Mereseini Waqali and Unaisi Tuberi helped stabilise the team.

Waqali’s saves prevented an even heavier scoreline, while Tuberi’s leadership at the back kept the defensive shape intact.

Conceding just once in the second half against such sustained pressure shows clear adjustment and mental resilience.

This kind of match can be a turning point for a developing side like Fiji women’s national football team.

While the result ends Fiji’s hopes of reaching the final, the second-half response highlighted the team’s resilience and growth against one of the region’s strongest sides.

New Zealand will now face Papua New Guinea in the final, while Fiji will look to build on the experience gained from the campaign moving forward.
