Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya – FIJI PARLT

Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya has criticised the Coalition Government’s performance, saying many Fijians are questioning whether the country has made real progress since the 2022 general election.

Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the President’s address last week, Koya used the analogy of a vehicle to describe the current state of the nation.

He said Fiji could be compared to a vehicle filled with passengers — the people of Fiji, including workers, farmers, small business owners, students and families.

According to Koya, the Coalition Government had asked these passengers to “get into the car” after the 2022 elections with the promise of driving the country towards a more prosperous, fair and transparent future.

However, he said many citizens were now questioning whether the journey had actually begun.

“Three years later, the passengers are looking out the window and asking various questions. Are we even moving?” Koya said.

He noted that the coalition did not secure an outright majority in the election, suggesting that many voters had already been cautious about placing their trust in the government.

Koya argued that instead of meaningful progress, the public continues to see political blame games.

“Thirty-six months later, we are still getting the blame game every time Parliament begins,” he said.

The opposition MP claimed that rather than moving forward, the country appeared to be “driving around in circles”.

“The passengers are not seeing progress. What they are seeing is a particular vehicle driving around in circles — the same scenery, the same arguments, the same confusion — round and round,” Koya said.
