FORMER New Zealand under-17 rugby rep Taniela Koroi is humbled to be named in the Flying Fijians side for the Europe Tour.
The Fijian-born tighthead prop will add power and skill to the front-row in Fiji’s attempt to upset European rugby giants France and Wales.
And with a load on his shoulder —— being the first from his village to wear the famous white jersey, Koroi is unmoved by the reputation of past record between Fiji, Wales and France.
The 23-year-old said he had a lot to offer to Fiji rugby and was looking forward to a good outing in his debut tour with the Flying Fijians.
He said beating France and Wales was a matter of the heart and he was ready for the challenge.
“Firstly I am humbled and honoured to be selected in the Fiji team despite having represented New Zealand U17,” said Koroi.
“I have watched some of Fiji’s game early this year and the set piece is one area that always lets the team down —— this motivated me to offer my service to my country.
“I understand that playing against France and Wales will be tough but on the other hand every player have two hands and feet but those that have big hearts will come out on top after the game.
“So I am ready to contribute effectively and help the side improve on its set pieces.”
The Nasau, Nabukelevu native of Kadavu said his selection was special being the first from his village to represent the country in the sport.
He said his experience of playing against and alongside some of the All Blacks players would make his job easier in Europe.
Koroi has played against All Blacks prop Tony Woodcock and was in the same team with All Blacks centre combination Conrad Smith and Ma’a Nonu during the ITM cup in New Zealand.
“My focus is to do my job in the scrums and most importantly to contribute positively to the side,” he said.
“Another big challenge is that I have not met or known many of the players in this team but I don’t think it would affect my game.”
Koroi was only 1-year-old when he moved with his family to New Zealand.
The 120kg prop departed the country yesterday with former Nadroga hooker and Australian-based Peni Ravai accompanied by Flying Fijians head coach John McKee and the team management.
