A NEW face on the long-distance race has emerged as a promising runner for Lelean Memorial School, with Year-13 student Maciu Koroi making an impressive debut in the 800 meters during the school’s inter-house competition at the HFC Bank Stadium.

In previous years, Koroi competed only in short-distance events including the 100meters and 200 meters. However, after struggling to achieve the results he had hoped for, he decided to switch things up this year by testing his stamina in the long-distance race which was the 800m category.

Competing in the 800m event for the first time, Koroi stormed through the heats to claim first place, announcing himself as one to watch in the Triple N Athletics zone meet.

Koroi revealed that unlike many of his peers, he did not train at school grounds as he is a day scholar.

“I train from home, balancing discipline and determination to prepare myself for the competition,” Koroi said.

He is now setting his sights on delivering an even stronger performance at the Triple N Zone, with hopes of qualifying for this year’s Fiji Finals.

“I am determined and has set a bold target — to win gold at this year’s Triple N zone meet and make my mark at the Coca-Cola games,” Koroi shared.

Koroi acknowledged the unwavering support from his friends, teachers, coaches, and family for backing him in pursuit of his goals.
