FIJI Airways Fijian 7s Head Coach Osea Kolinisau emphasises the importance of starting strong as they aim to defend their title in the upcoming Dubai 7s, the first leg of the HSBC seven’s series.
Kolinisau reveals that they will be taking 13 players to Dubai, with an additional five players participating in the Dubai invitational tournament.
This strategic decision allows for flexibility in case of injuries, as they can easily swap out players from the invitational squad.
Excitement surrounds the team as they prepare for the competition, with gratitude extended to the rugby board and Qatar Airways for their support in facilitating early arrival.
“We really want to start well this year in the Dubai 7s, as the defending champions we know the format has changed there is eight teams, and the top two go straight to the semi-finals, there is no more quarter finals,” said Kolinisau.
“That’s what we are working with the boys, especially on our kick off and attacks, cause last year we won the ball, but we got blown away in the rug, something we trying to improve from last year is to keep the ball.”
Kolinisau mentioned the team composition will include a mix of players, including standout performers from the Malolo and Naitasiri teams in the Skipper Cup.
Monitoring these players’ progress will be crucial in shaping the squad for the tournament.
“To enhance performance, the team has prioritised fitness training during the off-season, with a focus on upper body strength and conditioning in preparation for the rigorous demands of sevens rugby.
With a determined mindset and a comprehensive preparation plan in place, Fiji aims to make a strong statement in the Dubai 7s tournament.
The final squad for the Dubai 7s will be announced today, with the team set to depart on Sunday.
