A high-speed police chase in Suva early this morning has left two officers injured and three suspects under arrest, including one with a known criminal history, following the seizure of white substances believed to be methamphetamine.
Police said the incident began at the Laqere checkpoint when a vehicle failed to stop after being directed by officers. The driver instead fled towards the Tovata/Makoi area, prompting a pursuit by a joint operations team.
The suspects later turned back towards Suva, where they drove into a police roadblock, striking an officer in the process.
The chase ended a short distance from the checkpoint after multiple vehicles, including police units, were involved in a collision.
The officer stationed at the checkpoint sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. A second officer travelling in a police vehicle is being treated at the Valelevu Health Centre.
All three suspects are also admitted at the CWM Hospital under police guard.
Police confirmed that one of the suspects is a known criminal, raising concerns about repeat offending and public safety.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of white substances believed to be methamphetamine, along with tools allegedly used for house break-ins.
Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing joint task force efforts to crack down on criminal activity.
In a statement, police warned that attacks on officers will not be tolerated.
“The joint task force continues its surge operations, warning that such attacks on members of the operations team will not be taken lightly.”
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
