The New Zealand 7s players have been working on perfecting their basic skills ahead of their first match against Marist in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this weekend.
Team captain Sam Dickson said playing against Fiji was a good build-up for them.
“For us, one thing that we learned on our stay here in Fiji was playing footy during wet weather,” he said.
“We haven’t played in that kind of weather for a while and it was different.
“When we arrived two weeks ago, it was really hot. We have never experienced that before in New Zealand, so that took a while and then it started raining and started to cool things off a little bit.
“We have adapted to the weather and we are ready for the games this weekend.
“An area that we are looking to improve is our kick-off because in the last game, Fiji was kicking deep to us and that doesn’t happen often in the World Rugby Sevens Series. That was one learning phase for us.
“We have a lot of young boys who haven’t played in the world series, yet it is so obvious that Fiji is a world class team. They are testing us in a lot of different areas which is good.”
He said coming back from an injury that ruled him out for the Olympics had given him another chance at 7s.
