Kiribati’s land woes

EVEN though the Kiribati Government initially intended to use their 5000 acres of land in Naviavia for the purpose of farming, this intention may change with time.

Kiribati Land and Environment Minister Tebao Awerika said this was despite the fact that the land was originally brought to address the food security issues faced in his country.

Mr Awerika said the effects of climate change — the slow onset of sea level rice and seawater inundation — they had no arable farm lands.

“We import 60 to 70 per cent of our food items mainly because we cannot plant most of our foods on our land which is a serious concern,” he said.

“I do not know any other country that has such an alarming rate of food imports.”
