The Montfort Boys hall in Lami was filled with sounds and colours of Kiribati as the Kiribati diaspora in the Eastern Division gathered in numbers to commemorate the 44th Kiribati Independence Day.
Mr Nawaia Matia an organising committee member, said the celebration was not only a way to celebrate Kiribati national day but also a day in bringing together the expanding Kiribati diaspora in Fiji.
According to Mr Matia there are approximately 5000 Kiribati spread across Fiji and the annual Independence Day celebration is an opportunity for most of them to gather and rekindle ties.
He added some of them living in Fiji have forgotten their language and culture, so these celebrations are to remind the diaspora of the unique Kiribati culture.
Mr Matia said despite the unfavourable weather the huge turnout was a positive sign to the committee and the Kiribati High Commission.
He said the actual Independence Day is celebrated on July 12, however, the celebration and festivities carry on for a week.
