Kiribati Badminton prepares for Olympic qualifying tournaments

TARAWA,19 DECEMBER 2019 (RADIO KIRIBATI) – Two badminton players from Kiribati are undergoing intensive training in preparation for three qualifying tournaments in Australia and New Zealand prior to the 2020 Olympic Games.

Kiribati Badminton Secretary, Rota Onorio, told Radio Kiribati News Tinabora Tekeiaki and Tetiria Utimawa are currently training in Australia.

Onorio said the Oceania Championship was scheduled to be held in February 2020.

The other two qualifying tournaments, the Waikato International and North Harbour International in New Zealand will also start in February.

Onorio said the athletes will aim to accrue as many game points as possible to ensure they meet the requirements to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

He said the team’s ranking would be judged through its performance in the three competitions, as well as their recent qualifying events such as the Perth International, Sydney International and South Australia International.
