There have been cases of children receiving land or property titles from their aging parents only to sell them off and move abroad, says Minister for Women Sashi Kiran.
Ms Kiran told those present at the Sathya Sai Service Organisation — National Ladies Retreat in Rakiraki last weekend that 90 per cent of elders in State care homes were from the community.
“Our elders are being taken advantage of by those they once carried in their arms, by those they fed, clothed, educated, and protected,” she said.
“Today, we see cases where children receive land or property titles from their aging parents only to sell them off and move abroad, leaving their elderly mothers and fathers in aged care homes, under State care, or worse — abandoned and homeless.
“Ninety per cent of elders in State care homes are from our community.
I plead with you to have these conversations in your communities and step up service and care for elders living on their own, build prevention committees to stop family violence, and provide support to those suffering.”
She said to refer those who needed counselling to toll-free lines 1560 (women), 1325 (children), 5626 (any case, including elder abuse).
“As Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, I want to affirm our ministry’s deep commitment to addressing these challenges.
“We are actively working to:
- Strengthen protection systems for women, children and our elderly through legal reform, referral pathways and community outreach.
- Provide grants and support to NGOs, faith-based organisations and community groups who share our mission of empowerment and peace.
- Empower women leaders through training, funding opportunities, and programs that enhance their voice in governance, service, and the economy.
- Collaborate with organisations like yours, who complement Government efforts.”
