Legal action will be taken against parents or guardians who allow their children to loiter or live on the streets.

This warning was issued by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, following a noticeable rise in the number of street children across Fiji.

“Neglecting this responsibility will not be overlooked,” Ms Kiran said.

“If a child under your care is found loitering or living on the streets, legal action will be taken.”

Citing Section 8 of the Minor Offences Act (Cap 18), Ms Kiran reminded the public that loitering, particularly in circumstances suggesting an illegal purpose or for prostitution, is a criminal offence punishable by up to three months’ imprisonment upon conviction.

She also referenced the 2013 Constitution of Fiji, which affirms every child’s right to protection from neglect and abuse.

Article 41(1)(d) of the Constitution guarantees protection from violence, inhumane treatment, and hazardous or exploitative labour.

“Parents and guardians are urged to take this responsibility with the utmost seriousness. Neglect is not an option.”
