The Government of the day recognises the important contribution of Girmitiyas and their rightful place in Fiji’s history.

Assistant Minister for Women Children and Poverty Alleviation Sashi Kiran said this was why Girmit Day has been introduced for the first time as a holiday in Fiji.

She highlighted this while officiating at the Girmit Day celebration hosted by the University of the South Pacific today.

Ms Kiran conveyed her appreciation to the organising committee at USP for putting together this commemoration by organising a debate session for eight participating schools.

She also acknowledged the effort put in by each participating student, the support of parents and the guidance of teachers for enabling these youths and making today’s debate session a very impactful one.
