MINISTER for Women Sashi Kiran said the loss of Doctor Isireli Biumaitotoya has attracted hate speech instead of condolences and sympathy.

She made this remark at the 21st Anniversary of the Psychiatric Survivors Association (PSA) held in Suva last week.

Ms Kiran said that instead of appreciating the many contributions of the good doctor, people have been sharing their prejudices.

“This is a poor reflection on the society we have become,” Ms Kiran said. “May his soul rest in peace”.

Ms Kiran said Government was working on the review of the Online Safety Act to better protect Fijians from social media bullying.

“But as responsible citizens we should not wait for legislation, call out when you see anyone trying to harm another online or offline.

“Words have the power of lifting someone or drowning them into depression.”

She said social media has now become a platform for venting and spreading hate.

“How can we justify such hate?

“We have seen cyber bullying and of course bullying in schools and communities.

“As parents and adults, we need to guide our children to develop compassion and kindness, but adults need to practice these values themselves, especially on social media platforms.”

Ms Kiran commended the Psychiatric Survivors Association for their advocacy and support to those in need.

Since its establishment in 2004, the association has been at the forefront of reducing stigma, creating safe spaces, and empowering survivors to lead.
