The Sigatoka Magistrate’s Court has remanded a man accused of murdering his 77-year-old father.

Ashish Sen, 48, was produced before Magistrate Joseph Daurewa yesterday to answer to a count of murder.

Police alleged the accused had initially reported discovering his father lying motionless with visible injuries in their Bara Settlement home.

Defense lawyer Iqbal Khan requested his client be released on bail and offered to provide two sureties, and informed the court the accused would move to Lomawai.

However, police prosecutor Sgt Elina Ciri objected to bail saying the matter was indictable.

If released, she said, there was high chance the accused would interfere with witnesses.

Ms Ciri told the court violence was likely involved and the accused was likely to interfere with witnesses who lived near their home where the alleged offence took place.

Magistrate Daurewa also found it proper to transfer the matter to the High Court in Lautoka because of the serious nature of the alleged offence.

He ordered the defence file a proper bail application in the High Court.

The matter will be heard again on March 21.
