I’m just very happy to be able to meet my friends and family members again.
These were the words of 18-year-old ex-Marist Brothers High School student, Eparama Kikau, who had left the country last year after signing a three-year contract with the Queensland Cowboys.
The Tailevu lad joined Kirwan State Rugby League Academy, based in Australia after signing his contract with the Cowboys and arrived in the country on Tuesday with members of the Kirwan State High.
The senior team from Kirwan State Academy visited Kikau’s former high school, MBHS yesterday, where students met and congratulated Kikau on his achievement.
“It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen any of my family members and friends, so it’s good to be back.”
Kikau was part of the MBHS under-17 side that participated in the Vodafone Deans Competition last year, where they managed to reach the finals against Suva Grammar School but lost 8-3.
“It’s been five months from when I left Fiji, and while at Kirwan State Academy, I’ve learned so much that has made me a better player.
“I also want to thank Wise Kativerata for helping me get the contract with the Cowboys, along with all the staff at the Fiji National Rugby League as well.”
Kikau said he couldn’t believe his ears when he was told he had been offered a contract by the Queensland club.
“I never thought that I was good enough to get a contract. “So when I got it I was shocked and couldn’t believe it.”
He also thanked his family for their support in his decision in pursuing rugby league as a career path. “They have been very supportive, and would call every week to check on me while I was in Australia.”
Kikau aims to play rugby league at the National Rugby League competition in Australia, following the footsteps of his close family relative and NRL star, Viliame Kikau.
“I just want to play in the NRL and support my family, that’s the main reason I train hard and aim high.”
Kirwan State Academy will be playing Fiji’s own newly formed rugby league academy, South East Academy today, and the Western Academy on Monday at Albert Park in Suva.
