FAILING to seize opportunities and scrambling to retain control on the field were two points picked out by Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau, regarding his side’s performance in the HSBC Perth 7s.
Kolinisau made reference to their quarter-final clash against South Africa where they lost 0-19, following the side’s training session at Bidesi Grounds in Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.
“We had a lot of opportunities that we didn’t capitalise on. Looking back at the analysis, we had a majority of the possession, but we couldn’t capitalise on the opportunities and we played right into South Africa’s hand,” Kolinisau said.
He said the team sought to unravel the South African defence at the edges, however they did not do so.
“We talked about attacking the edges especially to South Africa, because they were going to give us the edges and we wanted to go hard on the edges but we came away from that,” he said.
“I think when you’re under pressure, a lot of the boys started doing individual things to try and help the team and we didn’t connect under pressure. We weren’t able to maintain, settle and just calm the situation down and know that we’re always in control especially (when we’re) five men down, six men down.”
Kolinisau said they are working on a path in which they could dominate the other end of the turf.
“As the saying goes, we live by the sword and we’ll die by that too, that’s something we’re learning especially when we make a break. We can settle down and we can create one more ruck and we can set it up for our next phase to try and score on the other side.”
Meanwhile, new find Mosese Naura has joined the squad following his selection during the Coral Coast 7s tournament last month.
