Opposition MP Ro Teimumu Kepa said the latest amendment to the Companies Bill of 2020 made the Government look desperate.

She said it was good to ensure uniform compliance with standards and obligation under the law, however, the timing of the pursuit of charitable trusts made it seem like a witch-hunt.

“It is good to ensure uniform compliance with standards and obligations under the law however the timing of this pursuit of charitable companies, many of whom do important work to supplement Government’s social welfare obligations, makes it look like a witch-hunt,” she said.

She said charitable trusts did important work to help communities and the underprivileged where Government simply could not go.

“What kind of consultation has been taken for these organisation to tell them about this new Bill that is fast-tracked today (yesterday).”

Ms Kepa said the Attorney-General should be after big tax evaders.

“The accompanying explanatory note 1.6 which empowers the Registrar of Titles to name and shame, this is very shameful to name and you should be ashamed Attorney-General.”

“To name and shame these charitable trusts which don’t comply with stringent requirements sets a depressing mean-spirited and negative tone.

“You should try to work in partnership with other organisations, especially those who do work where Governments cannot go, do proper consultations and dialogue with them before coming down hard on them.”
