Ra Bosevanua chairman Osea Kasami wants the reinstatement of the Native Court to address disciplinary issues among iTaukei youths.

In a submission to the Great Council of Chiefs Review Committee, he said the behaviour of iTaukei young men had changed.

“Many are disobedient and the work of the village headmen is of no use,” he said during a public consultation in Ra last week.

“Whenever the village headmen calls a meeting these youths don’t turn up.

He said the reinstatement of the native courts would also open up the opportunity for young people to be educated on traditional customs and values.

“We have gone through those days and we know what Fiji was like during those time in each village,” he said.

“Young people’s behaviour and attitude were good, nowadays our youths are becoming mischievous, full of pride and arrogant.

“They need to be educated. “If there is a village meeting they need to be punished because they are still young.

“Mr Kasami also called on those representing the Ra province at the GCC meeting to speak up.

“You have to go and speak and raise your voice. “Don’t bring shame to the yasana by keeping quiet.”
