The Inter-Dojo Karate Championship has been revived in a bid to kick start interest in martial arts in the country.
Renowned martial artist Stephen Brown said the event held at the YMCA gym on Saturday was put together to attract youths into the sport.
He said after the COVID19 pandemic, interest in the sport had died down.
The tournament manager said they were trying to revive the sport and entice the young generation to come forward and showcase their talent.
“Sometimes the youths are nervous and shy, and we want to bring them out of their shell so they can come and have fun,” said Brown.
“I was really happy at the turnout, some kids just started three weeks ago, and to see them taking part and breaking out of their shell is something amazing to watch.”
Brown said the tournament was about wellness and discipline and all about getting the youths together and doing something positive.
“There are 55 athletes competing in the tournament, and the youngest is 5-years-old.
“We are planning to have another tournament in August and another in the first week of December.”
He thanked all the parents and supporters for turning up, and supporting their child and the sport.
