GOOD news today for rugby-playing Fijian primary schools.
The Kaji Rugby competition has been given the green light by the Ministry of Education to stage the competition after it was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The competition is expected to be played under a different format when it starts on week three next term.
Fiji Primary Schools Rugby Union (FPSRU) president Sakiusa Turagabeci confirmed the introduction of the new format.
“In past years, we have been following the channel of competition through district, divisional then national competitions,” he said.
“For the next three years, starting this year, we are concentrating on district level. We have 39 unions and we thought of integrating the boys and girls to follow the rugby development in schools. There is no contact rugby from under-nine to U11 and contact rugby from U12 to U14. This district competition will be monitored by Fiji Rugby Union development officers and officials of the FPRU.
“For us, it is development first and winning later. We develop them now, they will surely lift the country in the highest platform of winning a gold medal like what our national men and women’s teams have shown.
“It is that achievement that we are focusing on to lift the standard of rugby at this young age.”
He said they hoped to have an overseas tour for the U12 and U14 teams at year end.
