Kadavu Rugby head coach Solomone Nute believes the team’s maiden Skipper Cup campaign is an important learning journey as the island side looks to improve after their opening match of the Skipper Cup against Nadi last weekend.
Nute said the team’s performance showed promising signs despite mistakes on the field, with the players gaining valuable experience against more established opposition.
“First of all, we thank God Almighty. This is our development and our growth,” Nute said.
“This is our first-time here as a baby of the Skipper Cup Competition since this is our debut to the competition this year. This group of boys, they come from the village, and we are trying to develop them from the village to bridge the gap from the Vanua Cup Championship to the Skipper Cup Competition.”
Nute said the team would return to the drawing board to analyse their performance and correct areas that need improvement.
“I think, in my heart, we are playing well. We are going back to our drawing board, learn from our mistakes and learn from that,” he said.
Nute added that the challenge for Kadavu is building consistency as they adjust to the intensity and demands of top-level provincial rugby.
The islanders will now shift their focus to their next assignment against Naitasiri at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori this Saturday.
“We still have to go back and review our game. I know there are some problems, but we can’t do that. We have to work on them,” Nute said.
The coach also acknowledged the important role played by their supporters in helping the team make history in their first Skipper Cup season.
“We thank our supporters, the supporters that built this and brought us here,” he added.
Kadavu will be aiming to turn lessons from their opening match into improvements as they continue their historic Skipper Cup journey.
