FIJI Judo Federation is looking for financial assistance to be able to organise club and national competitions.
Federation development director Simione Kuruvoli Sr said the priority now was to promote the sport, get new members and organise competitions.
“One of the biggest problems we are facing is funding which could help us organise tournaments,” the former national judo rep said.
“We are looking for corporate organisations to help us organise tournaments, especially events for children.
“We are reviving the sport through our new management. One of our main targets is teaching children the basics of judo which includes self-defence.
“There are a lot of abuse on girls and women, and rape nowadays. Children had been victimised. Judo can help because it teaches self-defence. “We are running free clinics for children because there is a need to help them.
“They need to be able to protect themselves and for us to be able to help them, we seek help from organisations or individuals who could help us.
“We continue to conduct training to children during this school break and are planning to organise a championship in April after the Easter holidays.
“This will help us promote the sport, allow the children to exhibit what they had learned and help us tap talents who could one day represent Fiji in international tournaments.”
Training sessions will continue this week at the Fiji Judo Training Centre beside the Nabua Primary School in Suva.
