The operator of a self-defence club is urging women and girls to enrol and learn how to defend themselves in light of the recent violent brawls.

Tiger Self Defence Club owner Samuela Tuinabua claimed that with hard drugs in the country — kidnapping, violence, brawls and assaults would continue to be an issue.

The former corrections officer said learning self-defence was now more important than ever.

“Fiji is changing and getting scarier by the day,” Mr Tuinabua claimed.

“During my time as a corrections officer, I would see the rapid increase of the number of inmates coming in for violence, rape and assault.

“My instant vision was what if we can provide a tool for victims or people so that they don’t fall victim in the first place.”

Mr Tuinabua said self-defence was a proactive measure that was needed for people to protect themselves from being raped, kidnapped, violated and assaulted.

“These issues will keep growing and it is time for parents, women, children and even men to take the initiative and learn martial arts.

“It is a very important skill set that should be learnt to be able to protect yourself, those around you and those you love.”

Mr Tuinabua said his mission was to establish martial arts programs or schools in every town in Fiji.

“Self-defence is not just learning to defend yourself, it is also learning to be aware of your environment and learning to defend yourself verbally.

“And I encourage and urge the greater public to take up self-defence because one way or another it will help you.”
