CRITICAL work on the Ellington jetty in Rakiraki, Ra is expected to be completed next week.
This has been confirmed by the Fiji Roads Authority which says the facility is expected to open to the public by November 22.
In a statement, FRA said the ongoing works were progressing well with 90 per cent overall work completed.
It said the contractors were now doing minor finishing touches to the jetty.
Earlier this year, the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji issued an order for the closure of Ellington jetty effective from January 6, 2025, due to “extensive damages”.
The opening of the jetty had been delayed a few times. Four months ago, the FRA reported that backfilling works, concrete deck slab construction and ancillary works needed to be done.
The final stages would be the installation and construction of the jetty deck.
Once the jetty reopens, it will provide a safer and more efficient access for commuters, transport operators and local businesses travelling between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
It will also support connectivity to outer islands and contribute to economic growth.
Other jetties around the country are also undergoing work.
Solar streetlights have been installed at the Vunisea, Naluvea and Kavala jetties in Kadavu through upgrade projects that ended last month.
The installation according to FRA brings improved visibility, safety and convenience to the communities in Kadavu and supports Fiji’s commitment towards renewable and sustainable energy solutions.
